Mykonos Town - Location Info

Mykonos Town (Chora, Hora) Sightseeing, Archaeological Museums, Attractions, Beaches & Nightlife in Mykonos Town Greece

Mykonos Town, Cyclades, Greece

Tasting the Original Flavor of Greek Spirit
Mykonos Town, the capital of Mykonos Greece, is the earthly paradise of vacationers. It’s been a famed tourist destination since the 60’s, when the popular actress and politician Melina Merkouri used to invite to Mykonos many of her famous friends and celebrities of the time.

Visitors to Mykonos Town can’t be left but spellbound with its amazing ambiance, enhanced by the traditional island architecture of the whitewashed houses with the colorful doors and windows, the charming narrow streets and the trademark windmills. It’s surprising how many imposing churches and lovely chapels you will come across while wandering around Mykonos Town. Most of them are dedicated to saints by sailors who managed to get back to the island safe and sound after having sailed rough seas for months, even years.

Wandering Around Mykonos Town & the Port
Mykonos Town market street is the ideal place for a shopping spree in the countless designer shops, boutiques and jewellery stores that will have you spending on souvenirs, beachwear, jewels and many more. You will also discover charming cafés, bars and restaurants serving delicious meals, small and cosy hotels, as well as the interesting museums and significant must see attractions.

You will adore the market area as no cars or motorbikes are allowed, giving you the chance to stroll around this enchanting maze of winding alleys, originally built like that to confuse pirates who invaded Mykonos more often than not during the 17th - 18th A.D.

This main street is the busiest part of Mykonos Town from the afternoon when people start hanging around almost until dawn! This street takes you from the port all the way through Chora and the celebrated Matogianni district with its lovely buzzing alleys and ends up back to the port again at Kouneni district.

Wonder how this street retains its local flavour and bright white color, despite the crowds strolling along from day to night? Well, it is whitewashed every single day!

Mykonos Port is a most lively and busy spot in Mykonos Town, as well. It’s the place where the renowned Mykonos mascot- an adorable pelican - hangs around! In the port area you there is also the fish market, where restaurant owners and locals give their daily battles to ensure they get the best fish and seafood, brought by local fishermen.

Spring Breaks in Mykonos Town
If you happen to visit Mykonos in Easter time, you will see Mykonos Town at its best, as it is the place to be for the Greek jet set and not only. It is the time marking the beginning of the tourist season and it is as lively as in summer time. On Good Friday evening, all three epitaph litanies of Mykonos Town pass through this street, followed by locals and visitors holding candles and lanterns. It’s an experience you should not miss.

Mykonos Town – A Starting Point for Amazing Explorations
Mykonos Town is surrounded by beautiful districts such as Vrissi, Tagoo, Gymnasio, Agia Sofia, School of Fine Arts districts just a stone’s throw away from down town and its lively welcoming atmosphere. All these areas can be easily approached on foot as they are within walking distance from Chora.

From Mykonos Town you also have easy access to all Mykonos Beaches, such as Tourlos, Ornos, Elia, Paraga, Kalafatis, Psarou, Paradise and Super Paradise and many more by bus or taxi, while you can discover the most remote ones, such as Agios Sostis, Mersini, Fokos and many others in your own vehicle.
